20th November 2018

My husband of 40 years has had many trips to Scarborough’s&even over the last couple of years and on 19th November last visit where he died in the resus room he had been a very ill man ‘ . Our day started at 2am and we called for the gp he wanted to admit my husband so rang 999 we have had paramedics before but god one of them this time was so arrogant voicing and snapping at me ; I had to get his wheelchair out of the back of our car To save them getting theirs; she moaned sharpley about everything and barked at me in confrontational way about one of my husbands problems ; I am a community nurse nMyself and had looked after my husband for many months , the a&e staff were all right this time but in the past some of them have been sour faced and vile , I trained at Scarborough in the early seventies and the standards of compassion empathy caring and professionalism have dropped terribly , sometimes all it takes is a smile to win us over

Broke my humerus at home. Ambulance and paramedic quick to arrive and I live in a village on the Moors. They were very caring and drove me to hospital carefully to help keep the pain under control. Gas and air in ambulance as difficulty getting a line into my vein for morphine. I was seen within 15mins on arrival could have done with some pain relief on arrival. When I felt faint given pain relief. Following day at fracture clinic seen within 30mins of my appointment and it was busy. The only thing I would have liked to see was my X-ray which I didn’t just told it was broken at the top of the bone.

I was taken to A&E in the middle of the night with severe chest pain and found all the staff there both capable and kind. After blood tests, an ECG and chest X-ray it was decided that I should be admitted. I was very afraid. I had been down an almost identical route in SGH 8 years before and my experience on the ward had been horrific. Nursing staff not giving even basic care, ignoring patients and using unhygienic practices. I had felt very vulnerable, afraid, couldn't sleep and my condition deteriorated. I was amazed and delighted by the difference last month. The staff on Cherry Ward were full of cheerfulness, there were several Health Care Assistants on the ward who were both efficient and competent. They treated all the patients with kindness, like fellow human beings. Everything was spotless and, in complete contrast to 8 years ago, I felt entirely safe. Well done SGH

I had an accident and was taken to A&E at Scarborough Hospital. I've visited Hull Royal many times over the years for accidents with family members so I was able to draw a comparison. Clearly they were busy, but so were the rest of the medics who had treated me up to this point and they had all been delightful. I was seen by a practice nurse throughout. There seemed to be no presence of doctors. This practice nurse was rude, abrupt and didn't discuss my injury. I had no opportunity to see X rays that were taken. I was given no information other than the basics, reluctantly given some crutches in a corridor and was discharged with no care. There really is no room in the NHS for people like this. I also overheard staff members talking about the delay in treating some people in the waiting room who had been overlooked. This was very unprofessional. I would strongly recommend that if you get the chance to choose a different hospital, that you take it.

I had a horrendous leg infection and was admitted to Haldane Ward. 3 days later (Thursday) my canula failed as my veins had collapsed and my specialist said I needed a central line in to administer my intravenous antibiotics. He then went off for his weekend. I suffered various other staff ignoring this recommendation but trying (and failing) to get other canulas in all around my body. Finally, at 3.00 a.m. Friday morning a male nurse came up from intensive care, woke me up, then said 'oh, I've tried you before - I won't touch you, I will bring a doctor'.(He wasn't going to put a line in - just try a canula again) He disappeared, and at 4.00 a.m. rather than the doctor I was expecting I was moved to Beech ward. Arriving in the midddle of the night (early Friday morning), they seemed less briefed on my needs and I had a young inexperienced doctor again suggest a canula. By then more than 24 hours had passed and I had no medication during that time. By the Saturday morning my husband and I were feeling desperate, and I actually told the young doctor that I was being neglected. He did nothing, I think he was so inexperienced he didn't want to bother a more senior member of staff, but because I had refused another canula the staff nurse was able to escalate my case to an anaesthetist to put the central line in - but she had to wait 4 hours to do so apparently. I finally got my line in at 6.30 p.m. that night and subsequently my next dose of antibiotics at 8.45 p.m. after 40 hours without any medication whatsoever. Sadly on this ward everyone was so busy that I did not always get my medication at all. At least 3 times my dose was missed and they just recorded 'unable to administer' - as if I had wandered off the ward myself! Very often I got the 4 x 2 intravenous antibiotics eventually, but not at the regular times I should have had. They also completely missed the injection in my tummy one day, and did not always have the time to dress my leg each day. I felt miserable, desperate, neglected and worried for most of my 18 nights in Scarborough Hospital. Of course, individual staff were run of their feet and kind, but it just wasn't enough as they were very under-staffed. There were a large number of elderly people with dementia on the ward I was on, and their needs were very often low priority. There just weren't enough staff to give them the time they needed - including telling them to wet the bed as they didn't have time to fetch a bed pan (or were in the wrong job role to do so). However, apart from one nursing assistant everyone was polite and kind, and the food was amazing - tasty and nutritious. I actually think that the healthy food was an important reason that I was not more seriously ill than I was, as it is so important when fighting infection. I really hope I have no reason to return to Scarborough Hospital. It was a dreadful experience overall and one I hope never to repeat. Constructive suggestions: Tell a patient what they can expect - a patient's charter should be at every beside Staff the wards sufficiently - it is just not good enough to have skeleton staff or to move people around from one ward to another so there is a lack of continuity in care Do not move patients from one ward to another at 4.00 a.m. That was appalling. Have senior staff check around the wards a bit more. Insist that any genuine patient concerns (like not getting one's medication for nearly two days) are brought to their attention so that people with the power to prioritise can do so.

Having moved to this location almost 10 years ago with long standing medical issues I have now been unfortunate enough to have needed treatment from three consultants at Scarborough Hospital for three different conditions and have found them all sadly lacking in patient care, understanding and respect. I have been treated at three different Hospitals before Scarborough depending on where we have been living at the time and have had NO problems at all with the many other consultants I have needed to be treated by. Scarborough Hospital has really been a let down for me to the point where we are considering moving location to be nearer to a Hospital with a better reputation as I will always need ongoing help from specialists. It is not at all clean, the food (may be better than a few years ago) but is still shockingly bad and the staff don't really seem to have enough self respect for themselves and just stand around talking about there hot flushes or there boyfriends (not really what you want to hear as your going into theater) and we wonder why there always running late! Where are the people in charge looking ?

I saw a heart consultant in November 2012 and was told I would be recalled for further tests. It is now nearly August 2013 and there has been no contact with me. Should I feel forgotten?
