On arrival at the hospital car parking was a huge problem, hopefully this will improve when the renovations are complete. Not being familiar with the Hospital I headed for the Main Entrance Information Desk to be greeted by two smiling faces but please don't be deceived by this initial friendliness. On asking for directions I was told to walk up the corridor and then follow the long tunnel which would take me to the department I required. However, due to the vague instructions received I was unable to find the tunnel so returned to the desk to as how far along the corridor was the tunnel located. The reply was "How long is a piece of string". Surely anyone has the manner and intelligence to say about 20 yards, 30 yards, 50 yards etc. but "How long is a piece of string" - How rude. I telephoned the department to ask for directions and the lady on the telephone was very helpful asking me where I was at the moment and directing me while I was on the telephone. I would not have found this particular department without her help as it was located down the tunnel, then outside down the hill, up a narrow alley and behind two porta cabins. With regard to the RUDENESS of the staff on the information desk I can only assume that they are volunteers with nothing better to do and they certainly have no respect for the NHS in Wales or patient care.

I feel I could have been better informed about delays to my treatment by ward staff. I understand that the delays were caused by emergency situations, but to be advised sooner would have been helpful.

As a palliative care nurse myself, I recently had experience of Morriston Hospital for a relative of mine, who was palliative. The experience was not good, the hospital itself while caring for my relative, did not seem to take any comments made by the family as urgent or even sometimes necessary. She was admitted due to an acute episode but her condition was poor, oxygen administered continuously due to low oxygen levels but she was not offered help for bathing or washing during this time. This meant a week in hospital with no shower or bath - would we find that acceptable? A referral for palliative care input had been requested by GP a week before while at home, and even though I had contacted the team myself there seemed to be no communication between community and hospital team for review of this patient. This resulted in 5 day waiting from the time she was admitted, during this time she had symptoms which were making her miserable. Nausea, constipation, pain in her legs. After being seen in hospital on Friday and syringe driver commenced, she wanted to come home, again hospital didn't seem to know about fastrack for palliative patients until I mentioned it, But on Monday we took her home ourselves, with services contacting us after discharge. Was seen by palliative consultant at home few days later, and she did contact me as requested, which I was grateful for, as I was going to be the main carer at home along with my brother. It is not as easy as you think caring for a loved one at home, and even as a nurse I found it hard, we were supported by Spice team for day time visits only. Lovely girls, and we were grateful for their input. District nurses came daily for syringe driver change, and they were excellent, talking and supporting us when needed, what a lovely team, thanks girls wont forget you. Palliative care continued with phone calls, during the week but changes to medication were done by GP and district nurses. We as a family are so pleased that she came home, and she passed away a week later, where she wanted to be, comfortable with her family with her. We knew time was short, but the intial input from the hospital, and palliative care team did not make us feel as if there was support, in fact the opposite and we had to fight to get her seen and be made comfortable. I hope that patients and families under the care of our team are never made to feel as unsupported as we were.

Morriston Hospital is undergoing a huge programme of improvements and every time I have to visit I notice the changes which are going to make it better for everyone, all who work there and everyone who will use the facilities. I hate to see anyone smoking outside the entrances and wish that they could have their own private screened area somewhere. Just a sniff of the smoke affects my breathing problem. It is not fair on any of the smokers to be stuck outside, sometimes in nightclothes, on view . How about an area with posters, and free incentives, including volunteer councillors.... to give it up. I wish everyone would treat the use of the toilets with respect. A notice, 'Please leave as you would like to find,' ...might just help. There are some very scruffy areas, for example around the Burns and Plastic Surgery Car Park 5 entrance for instance, where there are piles of scap metal, litter of all kinds and thousands of cigarette ends which need a tidy up. When I see it I wish I had a plastic bag big enough to put it all in and take it away for you!!! We always get lost and an 'Overall Plan' at each entry point would help visitors to find where they have to go, perhaps colour coded to the different areas. We have found that all Morriston employees are always kind, helpful, and go out of their way to offer assistanceat all times.

i was treated ok by most of the nurses but the male nurse who was meant to be looking after me didnt and i also overheard a conversation he had with another patient where in he was telling the patient all about me and what i was in hospital for. I found it very distressing and reported it to the nurse in charge but to my knowledge nothing was done about it.
