Review of King George’s - Accident & Emergency
21st May 2024

After six hours waiting no doctor dad on a trolly in hallway staff passing by at speed he’s 101 yrs old and after fighting for his country didn’t need to be treated like that in frustration he decided he couldn’t take no more so we left his doctor refused to come down yesterday so still waiting for a diagnosis twice he had to be wheeled somewhere to be taken to the toilet had he been in a cubicle he would have had the privacy to use a bottle bearing in mind he only has one leg

Suggested improvements
Had a bit more compassion for someone as elderly as my dad

Nurses seemed fed up and treated me as an inconvenience. They don’t explain what’s happening, introduce themselves or even make eye contact. After waiting for 4 hours in urgent care, I finally saw a doctor (dr Russell) and he said that if the nurses asked my previous medical history when I first arrived, I would have received treatment sooner. Dr Russell was the only doctor who explained things to me and seemed to want to help. He was concerned I may have a blood clot in my head so after another 4 hour wait, I was sent to SDEC. The doctor I saw there didn’t listen to anything I said. She told me to come back for a CT scan the NEXT DAY. When I came back the next morning at 10am, I waited 2 hours to see a doctor who told me he thought I’d already had the scan and he had to give me the results. He also didn’t listen to what I was telling him. I had to wait until 6.30pm to finally have the CT scan. I didn’t leave the hospital until 9pm. So waited 7 hours on Monday to be told to come back the next day where I waited for 11 hours! I had to ask for updates as no one would tell me what was going on, my urine sample was lost and no one even acknowledged let alone apologise for the long wait. When I asked for an update after waiting for several hours, the nurse rolled her eyes and just told me to keep waiting. There also needs to be better security. In a&e there was a woman clearly on drugs in the waiting room who was shouting at people and falling over. The nurses and 2 security guards totally ignored her. The next day when I finally went to have my CT scan, there was a man who was shouting at staff because he’d been waiting since 8am and was fed up. He was aggressive, telling them he was crazy and was going to hurt them. There was no security staff in sight!

Suggested improvements
Nurses and reception staff to communicate. A smile goes a long way. No one wants to be in a&e, they are in pain or very scared about their health and it’s unacceptable to be pretty much ignored and have nursing staff roll their eyes or kiss their teeth at you because you’ve asked for an update after waiting for 8 hours!

I have always had the upmost respect for the NHS staff. As a carer for my husband, I would suggest anyone that is critical of waiting times or not getting seen to as soon as possible should spend a day in the life of the dedicated NHS staff. What I saw was unbelievable, the constant stream of patients being wheeled at all hours of the day. To add to this, the verbal and at times physical abuse they have to endure. Yet they just kept going. Let me add, they do not get paid enough to take this level of stress and lack of support. I will be writing to my local member of Parliament, Wes Streeting, who has been in the press lately, talking on how he intends to revamp the NHS. All for the benefit of his donors.

The nurses & carers looked after me very well. The night security was amazing, as were the nurses. When the morning shift changed the security team was incredibly rude, threatening & arrogant. For someone that was in majors they showed 0 compassion & empathy towards me even though I was the only one waiting to be seen & was being very polite & considerate through my stay even though I was incredibly ill. I stayed for approx 18 hours sitting on a plastic chair or a hard & rigid sofa without a bed. Bear in mind, I had been suicidal. 4 IV’s & not being kept updated & when I wanted fresh air I had been demeaned by nurses during the day shift & ordered to wait even though I caused 0 threat & didn’t need escorting by a member of the nursing team & security. I specifically asked to be taken to King George however, I hope I never have the unfortunate luck of going back ever again as it was almost militant. The head of security (Jo) I believe showed 0 patience towards me but, the loudest person in there, who is apparently a regular he was laughing with. Overall an extremely traumatic experience when, I should have just been there for my own wellbeing.
