I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee reconstructive surgery and general trauma. My scope of practice includes primary hip and knee replacement, revision of existing hip and knee replacements, partial knee replacement, patello-femoral joint replacement and patient specific knee replacement. I also undertake 'soft tissue' knee reconstructive surgery including arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, cartilage surgery, meniscal surgery, patell-femoral re-alignment for instability, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) and revision ACL-R. I qualified from the University of Dundee in 2003 and spent junior doctor years in Scotland, New Zealand and London. I was fortunate to train in hospitals such as the Royal London Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) during this time. In addition, I completed a teaching post in anatomy and was awarded a research fellowship at the RNOH, under the supervision of Professor Tim Briggs, looking at cartilage regeneration procedures, specifically autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) and matrix induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI). I was awarded a position on the illustrious RNOH (Stanmore) training rotation to complete my higher surgical training. This allowed me further exposure to general orthopaedics as well as 'tertiary' level work at Great Ormond Street Hospital and, again, at the RNOH. I was awarded fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015 and the following year was awarded another fellowship at the RNOH in hip and knee reconstruction under Mr. Richard Carrington. This allowed me to further my experience of reconstructive techniques as well as broaden my exposure to cartilage regeneration surgery, being trained in stem cell autografting. I have been a Consultant at Colchester General Hospital (CGH) since September 2017. Aside from my clinical interests I have a keen interest in training up and coming doctors. I am the Unit Training Director at CGH as well as being a board member of the iconic Iceni centre. Furthermore, I have a great interest in enhanced recovery for total hip and knee replacements. I am currently in the process of setting up a new programme such that the most highly effective and efficient levels of care are put in place and patients are fully engaged and informed in all levels of their care. I have published a number of academic papers in orthopaedics, taught on numerous courses and presented at international conferences. My currentl interest is in the use of robotic assisted knee replacement. Aside from work, where possible(!), I enjoy exercise, watching sports and fishing.
