I have been the NHS lead for Urogynaecology services throughout Worcestershire for over 20 years. At Spire South Bank I manage all aspects of benign gynaecology including pelvic floor problems, urinary leakage, menopause symptoms/HRT, abnormal vaginal bleeding and vulval irritation. I have specialist expertise in managing pelvic floor prolapse, stress and urge urinary incontinence, bladder irritation, bladder pain and recurrent cystits (UTI). I take referrals from all parts of the UK. I can provide the full remit of investigations for these problems including links with physiotherapy, urodynamic studies, outpatient cystoscopy, non-surgical (eg pessaries) and surgical treatments. I have good links with colorectal colleagues for concurrent bowel emptying problems and run the local Worcestershire Multi-disciplinary team meetings. Some of the treatments for incontinence can be performed under local anaesthesia as a day case procedures. I ensure that patients are not rushed into making decisions. I am a great believer in giving patients time to make decisions and employ non-surgical therapies wherever possible. I am happy to discuss the issues around the use of mesh, although the majority of surgical treatments I employ do not involve mesh at all. I ensure patients have access to appropriate reading material (www.bsug.org.uk and www.iuga.org, links to both in the Qualifications and Professional Membership section) and and set realistic expectations before agreeing to proceed to any surgical intervention. I trained in Nottingham, qualifying in 1990. I completed a Urogynaecology training fellowship in Melbourne, Australia. I was appointed to Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as a consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist in 2000 with the particular remit to develop Countywide Urogynaecology Services. I was very proud when Worcester became one of the first units in the UK to be externally accredited for its level of service, clinical outcomes and safety in 2010. I have worked nationally as the Chair of the Audit Committee of the British Society of Urogynaecology. I led on the development of the first UK national database to monitor surgical outcomes. Personally, I have one of the largest datasets on surgeries for prolapse and urinary incontinence in the UK.
